The Architectural Nexus facility in Salt Lake City exemplifies the adaptive reuse of a 50-year-old building, with a strong focus on reducing the firm’s environmental impact. The 30,000-square-foot project has achieved LEED Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® for New Construction 2009, Version 3, and meets the 2030 Challenge standards. By revitalizing an existing site, Architectural Nexus has preserved two acres of open space, avoiding the need for new municipal infrastructure and utility extensions. The area around the building has been transformed from asphalt to landscaped terraces, offering shaded outdoor gathering spaces and reducing heat accumulation. Native and adaptive plants were chosen to minimize irrigation needs, managed by a computerized control system that adjusts for weather conditions.
